Crestor for Prevention of Heart Disease?

The statin Crestor has now been approved for use by those without heart disease to prevent heart disease. Granted this is only for people who might have a risk factor.

My concern is that listening to the radio earlier today it was stated that Crestor can now be used a preventative for heart disease. If pharmaceutical companies can claim that, how many more people can they scare into taking their products.

Crestor, like all statins has a great many draw backs. Among other issues, statins can disrupt the body’s ability to create vitamin D. I have concerns that people will see this as more of a miracle drug to put into their body that will prevent them from taking care with their health through diet and life style choices. We can’t just take pills that allow us to keep doing the same unhealthy things we’ve always been doing.

If any readers are on statins, I am not saying go off of them. That is an individual choice between patient and doctor. It’s very important to understand what your body needs. My bias is against pharmaceuticals but there are times when many drugs are appropriate. The choices I would make for my body are different from those my husband would make. Given my husband’s family history, the advice our naturopath gives to him versus me is also very different.
