On another blog, they were talking about working towards health in the world. I firmly believe that is a direction we need to go. They summarized their post by saying, “There is no peace without health.”
I have to consider–what kind of peace? World peace? Personal peace?
Many people with chronic conditions find peace even without perfect health. I think that we often think that without health there is nothing. This is not actually the truth. Many people have less than perfect health and find themselves leading productive lives and finding peace. Their secret is to let go of the expectations that they can do exactly what others do. They find ways to adapt their lives around their limitations They work around the limitations, rather than in spite of them.
Death and sudden illness do cause chaos. It can be hard to reconcile how such difficulties can befall a good person (which is anyone really). However, these things happen. We can’t change that. What we can change is how we view such difficulties. It is fine to be angry that they happen. It is fine to work towards having it happen less. However, real peace comes from knowing that the whys and hows of illness are beyond our understanding. Only when we accept that sometimes these things, no matter how difficult or horrible they seem on the surface, happen. Sometimes something wonderful happens after.
